Two days of workshops covering WordPress concepts relevant to bloggers and content creators.
WordPress is the most widely used technology behind blogging in the Caribbean. Kingston WordPress invites you to come learn why that is and take your WordPress skills to the next level.
WordPress is the most widely used technology behind blogging in the Caribbean, and so to provide more educational content to the blogging community, WordPress in the City was born.
Kingston WordPress will be using these workshops to generate interest in WordPress and the local community, as well as to engage the WordPress community to bolster our regular meetup events
WordPress in the City will take place over two (2) days. The topics have been selected to cover some basic WordPress concepts relevant to bloggers and content creators, and will include a mix of practical workshops as well as interactive presentations.
Additionally, the event will be made inclusive by targeting the Deaf community with a workshop exclusively for them, as well as having Jamaican Sign Language (JSL) interpreters in all the educational sessions.
We are finalizing our speakers, but you will benefit from a combination of local and international WordPress experts.

The central focus of the proposed event will be the workshops. All proposed sessions will provide actionable training on various WordPress topics relevant to bloggers, in particular. The introductory sessions are geared at beginners and are expected to be practical working sessions. The intermediate sessions will be presentation-style interactive workshops so participants can work along with the speaker if desired.
The currently proposed sessions are described below:
WordPress 101: Getting Started with WordPress
Duration: 2 hrs 45 mins
This session will walk participants through how to setup a basic, hosted blog using WordPress.com, then show them how to customize and add content. They will be introduced to concepts such as themes, plugins and widgets, and more.
Step Up Your WordPress Game
Duration: 2 hrs 45 mins
This session will introduce participants to more advanced topics for self-hosted WordPress blogs such as:
Plugins - how to select and test pluginsThemes - how to evaluate, choose and customize themesSecurity – how to protect a site from spam, robot attacks etc.Backup and Recovery - how to manage updates and protect yourself from site changes
Blogging Best Practices
Duration: 1 hr
This session will provide an overview of best practices for bloggers including tips on visual design, content, engagement, promotion, monetization and legal and ethical issues.
Duration: 1 hr
This session will provide an introduction to Information architecture, i.e. the art and science of organizing page structure, navigational menus, and content labelling through tags and categories. Participants will learn how to help people find all the resources and information on their site, without resorting to the Search box.
SEO/Content Marketing Tips
Duration: 1 hr
This session will provide an introduction to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how good content marketing can build your traffic. Participants will learn how native WordPress settings can help with SEO, as well as look at themes and plugins to help.

Registration to attend WordPress in the City will be open soon. This is not a for-profit event, so the ticket prices will be nominal to go towards covering expenses.

We need volunteers to help execute WordPress in the City. If you're interested in helping with planning the workshops, or working on the workshop days, fill out the Volunteer signup sheet below.
Volunteers will be able to attend the workshops for FREE.
We are looking for speakers who can contribute their expertise to our local WordPress community. You can submit to run one of the proposed workshop topics, or propose something similar that would benefit the community.
As WordPress in the City is a community event, we are asking speakers not resident in Kingston to cover their own costs (travel, accommodation and meals) with the exception of the Speaker Dinner. We will provide recommendations on travel and accommodations if you are planning to participate.
